Amman, May 26 (Petra)-- Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh met with the UK's COP26 Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and Africa, Janet Rogan.
Shawarbeh highlighted the challenges facing Amman including a lack of natural resources, especially water and energy, and the refugee crisis, which has caused pressure on the city's infrastructure and the high costs of municipal services, in addition to challenges related to climate change, including rainfall and drought.
During the meeting, which was attended by City Director Ahmad Malkawi and a number of his deputies and directors of the concerned departments, Shawarbeh stressed that the plan is a continuity of the Amman prevention strategy and is in line with the government's commitments to international agreements and obligations.
Amman's climate change plan is an ambitious first step on a long journey to create a sustainable and vibrant future to reach carbon neutrality while expanding services and meeting the needs of the fast-growing city, Shawarbeh said.
He added that the plan aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030 until reaching a carbon-neutral city for 2050.
Rogan praised Amman's efforts in managing the impact of climate change and the increase in demand for resources and services as part of the C40 initiative.
She also praised the establishment of the Amman Green City scheme to support its residents to adapt to the daily realities of water scarcity, pollution and rising temperatures.
British Ambassador to Jordan Bridget Brind stressed that the Amman Municipality plays a vital role in working to adapt to the challenges and opportunities of climate change in Jordan, and that the United Kingdom is working with Amman Mayor and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to support adaptation in the transport sector, which provides an opportunity for a transition toward green public transport, reducing emissions and pollution in Amman.
