Srinagar- Developed with much fanfare, the footpath alongside the famous Dal Lake is giving tough time to pedestrians and tourists.

People allege the walkway is ill-designed, filled with mud and potholes.

Authorities laid this stretch with non-skid vitrified tiles with grass patches along the lake in 2018.

The work was carried out by the Division 2nd of Roads & Buildings Department under the Smart City Project.

“Pedestrian walkways along Dal Lake have been aesthetically built to provide neat and clean walking space along Dal Lake,' notes the official website of Srinagar Smart City.

Then DC Srinagar Syed Abid Rasheed Shah had shared the project details on Twitter.

Nitizens back then had welcomed the move. The pathway took three to get completed.

But now, locals and tourists find it hard to walk on the stretch especially from Dalgate to Nehru Park which witnesses heavy tourist footfall.

“It's difficult to walk on the footpath as it's full of potholes and mud,' said Shadab Abbas, a local. 'Authorities should have gone with simple design.'

A senior official of the R&B Department division told Kashmir Observer that the pattern of the tiles was approved at the higher level.

“Because of the heavy rush of locals and tourists on the stretch from Dalgate to Nehru Park, the grass patches on the footpath get damaged,” he said.

“We will do whatever it takes to make the stretch friendly for pedestrians,” he added.
