An 18-year-old gunman shot dead 19 students and two adults at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday, May 24, before being shot dead by police, according to officials.

After shooting his grandmother and smashing his car outside Robb elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, authorities said the shooter entered the school. Her condition at the hospital is thought to be critical.

The gunman opened fire on“children, teachers, whoever was in his way,” according to a Texas Department of Public Safety officer.

Multiple officers were shot by the suspect, who was wearing body armor. The attacker was then shot and killed on the scene.

The motive was not immediately clear, according to the police, and the attacker is believed to have acted alone.

Officials told reporters that the alleged gunman purchased two firearms on his 18th birthday.

The Robb elementary school includes around 500 kids, the majority of whom are Spanish speakers. The parents of the students were requested to pick up their children from the school.

Shortly after returning to the White House following a five-day trip to Asia, Joe Biden addressed the country on Tuesday night.“It's time to turn this pain into action,” the president said in an emotional speech, pushing“common sense” gun laws.

Violence in American cities has risen recently, and a similar incident occurred just a few days ago in a store.
