(MENAFN) On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department declared that it would not expand the restriction waiver that permitted Russia to make independent debt payments to Americans, in an attempt, officials earlier stated that would cause Moscow to be in technical default of its debt duties.
The general permit waiver, which is set to end at 12:01 on Wednesday, is not going to be expanded, a notice published on the Treasury website stated that.
It was extensively estimated move, mentioned in a report as likely by numerous US outlets last week and all but confirmed by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
Washington had stopped Russian accounts around the war in Ukraine, but distributed a debt waiver because Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo debated that such payments would divert funds from the armed.
