Officials say heavy rains have caused severe floods in Bangladesh and India, stranding millions and killing at least 57 people, The Guardian reported on 22nd May.
The strongest floods in Bangladesh's north-east region in nearly two decades have stranded roughly 2 million people.
Floodwaters flooding in from India's north-east destroyed a major embankment on the Barak River, deluging at least 100 villages in Zakiganj, according to Mosharraf Hossain, the Sylhet region's chief government administrator.
According to Arifuzzman Bhuiyan, the head of the state-run Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the floods had affected 70% of Sylhet district and 60% of neighboring Sunamganj, according to the Agence France Presse (AFP).
“There were more flood-affected people than the estimated relief packs. At one point everyone started to snatch relief goods when police dispersed the crowd,” local police chief told AFP.
The army assisted state and national rescue services in rescuing people from villages and distributing food, clean drinking water, and other essentials, as well as clearing highways.
Every year, floods wreak havoc in regions of northeastern India and Bangladesh, killing hundreds of people.
