Fiber optics access to the user, the so-called fiber to the home (“FTTH”), has been adopted by many regions across the globe. In the MENA region, the number of Arab countries which commercially launched fiber services to residential and corporate subscribers increased an additional two countries in 2021, to reach a total of 17 Arab countries. These countries are: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, the UAE, and Yemen.
Arab Advisors Group released a new report: "FTTH Rates in the Arab World: A Regional Comparison." The report, which was released in February 2022, answers the following questions:
• What is the Internet regulatory landscape in the MENA region?
• What are ISPs’ residential FTTH offerings?
• Which ISPs top the list in terms of residential FTTH affordability?
• How did residential FTTH affordability vary between 2020 and 2021?
“Our analysis revealed that the average monthly fees for the 100 Mbps speed of FTTH in the Arab World stood at US$123.56. We found that Iraq’s fees for the same speed was the lowest compared to the regional average, being 78.38% below the average monthly fees of the region.” said Ms. Dana Shekem, Arab Advisors Group’s Analyst.
“Internet service providers are constantly altering their offerings, enhancing the quality of their services, reducing service fees, and offering converged services. After assessing the FTTH market in MENA, telcos have been found to have reduced their residential FTTH fees in nine out of the 17 countries analyzed in the report. 52% of the ISPs offered double and triple play FTTH bundles that include voice and cellular calling minutes, access to TV stations, and even more recently, online gaming credit, all in efforts to increase their subscribers’ base,”added Ms. Shekem. “In Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, we have seen ISPs launching prepaid FTTH plans, in addition to their existing postpaid plans to reach a wider segment of the market.”
