Doha: Swiss International School Qatar (SISQ) launched an awareness campaign about animal rights and extended help to the Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS) which has over 200 animals that are awaiting for adoption.

In order to address the situation of QAWS, Grade 6 students created a project for the international Global Social Leaders competition. The competition involves nearly 9,000 children from 102 countries worldwide and the students from SISQ are representing Qatar by addressing the UN sustainability goal of“life on land.”

Initially, the students launched an awareness campaign about animal rights in Islam and they made adoption posters for animals in need. As QAWS relies entirely on support from the public, the Grade 10 Design classes manufactured a puppy playground and a cat exercise area using recycled materials. This area will allow potential adopters to bond with the animals and see whether the animals will be comfortable with young children or other pets. Moreover, SISQ students will also be creating signage and garden areas for the animals.

QAWS said on its social media page:“A huge, huge thank you to all the staff and students at the Swiss International School who have worked so hard over the past few months to design and build some amazing pieces of equipment for our animals! From cat scratch posts to bird houses to dog bridges, a truck full of fun play equipment arrived at the shelter much to the delight of our animals! Along with all the cat hidey holes and climbers, our kitties also got stacks of the cutest handmade toys too!”

It added:“We are so impressed with the pieces donated and so very grateful we were made their project for the term! Our dogs have already been testing out their new activity pieces in the off-lead run and they were a huge success!”

Individuals who have printing facilities or gardening materials to donate, contact Claire Olivier at [email protected] Meanwhile, for those who wants to be a volunteer at QAWS, one can do so by visiting its website .
