NEW YORK — Former Robinhood communications head Christina Smedley has co-founded a new venture — a bitcoin-related company called Lightspark — eight months after leaving the investment platform.

Smedley will lead marketing, communications, and community for Lightspark, which was“created to explore, build and extend the capabilities and utility of Bitcoin.” Work will focus on the Lightning Network, which is designed to make bitcoin transactions faster and easier than they are on the main blockchain.

Smedley started the company with a team of co-founders including CEO David Marcus, who joins from Meta, and chief strategy officer Christian Catalini, founder of MIT's Cryptoeconomics Lab.

Smedley departed Robinhood in September following a tumultuous year for the platform, which was marked by a PR crisis when the stock trading app faced considerable scrutiny — and 30-plus lawsuits — related to the GameStop buying frenzy .

She had joined Robinhood as its first CMO and communications head in August 2020, as which she was responsible for consolidating marketing, communications and content under one function. Before that, Smedley spent five years at Facebook , where she most recently was VP of brand and marketing for Novi, a digital wallet for the Libra blockchain payment network.
