India, Nepal Pledge To Deepen Bilateral Ties

NEW DELHI, May 16 (KUNA) -- India and Nepal agreed on Monday to deepen bilateral relations in a number of areas of mutual interest.
Indian External Affairs Ministry said in a statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi who paid an official one-day visit to the neighbouring Nepal held extensive discussion with his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba, during which they both 'discussed specific initiatives and ideas to further strengthen cooperation in various sectors, including culture, economy, trade, connectivity, energy and development partnership'.
Building upon their discussions held on April 2 in New Delhi, 'The two sides agreed in principle to establish sister city relations between Lumbini and Kushinagar, that are among the holiest sites of Buddhism and reflects the shared Buddhist heritage between the two countries,' the statement said.
Both leaders reviewed the existing ties and 'expressed satisfaction at the progress made in bilateral power sector cooperation in recent months that covers development of generation projects, power transmission infrastructure and power trade.' The Nepalese Prime Minister invited Indian companies to undertake the development of West Seti hydropower project in his country, while Modi assured New Delhi's support in the development of hydropower sector in Nepal. He also pledged to encourage Indian developers to expeditiously explore new projects in this area. Both sides also agreed to further expand educational and cultural exchanges among other issues.
