Lebanese Interior Minister Says He Is Pleased With Elections


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, May 16 (KUNA) -- Lebanese Minister of Interior Bassam Al-Mawlawi on Monday voiced satisfaction at the freshly-concluded parliamentary elections and declared some results.
Speaking at a news conference, the minister said balloting in the first south constituency reached 46.6 percent, naming some of the winners such as Abdulrahman Al-Bizri, a doctor who had masterminded the national campaign against the coronavirus, and Usama Saad, a locally renowned Arab nationalist.
In the second south constituency, some of the well known winners were Nabih Berri, the veteran parliament speaker and Enaya Ezz-Eddine, a doctor and ally of Amal movement that Berri leads.
In the first Beqaa constituency, winners were Michel Daher and Salim Aoun. The latter is affiliated with the Free Patriotic Trend led by Jibran Bassil. In the second Beqaa constituency, some of the winners were Qabalan Qabalan, a veteran Amal leading member and Wael Abu Faour from the Socialist party of the veteran politician, Walid Jumblat.
In the third Beqaa constituency, a number of the known winners was Hussein Al-Hajj Hassan of Hezbollah and Jamil Al-Sayyed, who had once served as Chief of the State Security apparatus.
In the first Mount Lebanon constituency, among the winners was Ne'emeh Fram, a businessman and industrialist and Simon Abi Ramia of the Free Patriotic Trend that had been formed under leadership of the current president, Michel Aoun, Bassil's father in law.
In Mount Lebanon third constituency, some of the winners were Ali Ammar (Hezbollah), Camille Chamoun from the National Liberals Party of the late president, Camille Chamoun, and Hadi Abulhessen (from Jumblat's party).
The elections were held in 15 constituencies throughout the country, amid tight security measures.
It has been reported that a number of new figures, namely young activists from the civil movement, has won membership in the 128-seat parliament at the expense of contenders from the political parties.
Moreover, Samir Geagea, a veteran politician and leader of the Lebanese Forces Party, declared satisfaction with the results, amid reports that his nominees won more seats in the parliament at expense of his arch foe, Bassil.
Polling was generally medium to low, amid severe living crisis, marked with inflation, unemployment and a very weak pound. (end)
