Dhaka: Labour export during the January-April period in 2022 saw 226 per cent growth over the same period of 2021, according to data of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET).
The coronavirus situation marked an overall improvement with economies of labour-importing countries started picking up gradually, according to reports.
Bangladesh saw an export of a record 426,558 workers overseas during the January-April period of 2022, compared to 181,040 workers during the same period last year, added data of BMET.
Saudi Arabia was the top destination of Bangladeshi workers with 268,584 workers (over 63pcof the market share), followed by Oman with 56,830 workers (13.32pc), UAE with 51,531 workers (12pc), Singapore with 13,564 (4.36pc), Jordan with 6,654 workers (1.56pc), Qatar with 6,241 (1.39pc), Kuwait with 3,167 workers (0.61pc), Italy with 443 workers (0.10pc) and UK with 101 workers (0.02pc), noted BMET data.
In 2017, Bangladesh exported a total of 1.01 million workers – the highest number in a year during the last 50 years. In 2019, the number was 700,159 while in 2018 it was 734,181.
On this note, recently, the Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad said the Bangladesh government will maintain total transparency in sending workers to Malaysia as the Southeast Asian country has opened its labour market after three years in 2022.
The Malaysian government is expected to recruit some 600,000 foreign workers in 2022 and Bangladesh is working on exploring the maximum quota, he added.
