Sweden agrees to join NATO

(MENAFN) Following the Finnish administration’s lead, Sweden's governing Social Democratic Party has confirmed its support for the nation’s NATO membership ambition.

The Social Democrats committed “to work for Sweden to apply for membership in NATO.” in a declaration released on Sunday. Nevertheless, if the proposal is approved, Sweden would “against the deployment of nuclear weapons and permanent bases on Swedish territory,” according to the party's leadership.

Following a huge shift in public opinion following Russia's invasion on Ukraine, Finland and Sweden decided to reexamine their long-standing strategy of non-alignment. According to the newest polls, both nations' populations currently support NATO admission. Helsinki and Stockholm have been cautioned against joining the group, and Moscow has pledged a swift response if they do so.
