Turkiye's opinion on Finland, Sweden enrolling NATO not good, Erdogan says

(MENAFN) Old NATO member Turkiye is reviewing the argument over Finland and Sweden partnership in the alliance, nonetheless it does not have a good opinion for now, according to the country’s leader.

Turkiye’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan informed the media following Friday prayer in Istanbul "We are currently following developments. We currently do not have a positive position on the issue of Sweden and Finland (joining NATO)."

Erdogan also said: "There are supporters of terrorism in parliament. We cannot be positive towards this" noting that those "Scandinavian countries are like terrorist groups guesthouses."

In July two years ago, Turkiye criticized a video conference amid Sweden’s foreign minister and members of the terrorist group YPG/PKK, the Syrian branch of the PKK. The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated the case “raises serious question marks about Sweden's approach to combating terrorism as a matter of priority."

Due to NATO instructions, any resolution on expansion have to be made “by unanimous agreement,” successfully giving Turkiye the control to ban any new members.
