27 People Perish In Fire In Indian Capital


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, May 14 (KUNA) -- A fire has erupted in a commercial building in the India capital New Delhi killing 27 people and injuring 12 others, police said on Saturday.
At least 27 people died and dozens were injured when the fire broke out in a commercial four-storey building located in West Delhi's Mundaka district, late on Friday, the police said.
Firefighters rescued at least 50 people as they deployed cranes and pressed into service 24 fire engines. Several people jumped off through the windows as smoke from the fire spread to the entire building leading to deaths and injuries.
The police arrested two people who own a CCTV camera office in the first floor of the building where the fire broke out first.
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed their sorrow over the incident.
The president said: 'Distressed by the tragic fire accident at a building near Mundka Metro Station in Delhi. My condolences to the bereaved families.
For his part, the prime minister Modi said, 'I wish for speedy recovery for the injured .. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.'
The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. (end)
