Doha: After the successful graduation of its first batch of students last year, the College of Medicine (CMED) at Qatar University will graduate 23 Qatari students/medical doctors this month.

QU will celebrate the 45th Batch (Class of 2022) Graduation Ceremony on May 25, 2022, while individual colleges have separate dates. The College of Medicine will celebrate theirs on May 29 alongside Colleges of Health Sciences and Pharmacy.

“The second batch of students graduating in May 2022 are 59 medical doctors in total, including 23 Qataris,” Dr. Marwan Abu Hijleh, Acting Dean of College of Medicine, told The Peninsula in an interview.“Out of this total, 45 medical graduates have been accepted directly into various HMC residency programmes; 13 medical graduates were accepted in the Transitional Year of the residency programmes at HMC — which is considered a conditional bridge year before final acceptance. One medical graduate will undertake an Internship Year before applying again to one of the HMC residency programmes,” he added.

This is a significant upgrade for the young college because last year, 46 students completed the six-year medical doctor (MD) programme, of which 17 were Qataris. The increase in Qatari graduates further aligns with the human development pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV). This aims to empower the people of Qatar to sustain and support their country's growth and requires improvements within education, health care and the workforce in general.

Meanwhile, Dr. Marwan also disclosed that the college hopes to build a more extensive structure in 2023. He added that this would increase the college's intake capacity.

“Construction of the new college building is expected to start in 2023, which will cater to more medical students in the future to meet increasing demand. The introduction of new MSc degree programmes will contribute towards the personal and professional development of health care practitioners in Qatar,” he added.

CMED at QU was founded in October 2014, following an Amiri Directive and a thorough feasibility study as a joint initiative by Qatar University and HMC. It admitted the first cohort of students in the fall of 2015.

CMED plays an integral part in QU Health Cluster as part of a synergistic interprofessional and interdisciplinary effort to collaborate in teaching, research, and community outreach, advancing knowledge, addressing local and regional challenges, and contributing to population health.
