Srinagar- The government forces on Tuesday placed Kashmir Valley, including capital Srinagar, under a thick blanket of security to thwart any possible militant attack and to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of R-Day celebrations.
According to officials, the security was been put on maximum alert in major towns and districts of the Valley on Tuesday with J&K police, including its members from CID wing and SOG personnel ordered to maintain a strict vigil, amid apprehensions of a possible militant attack to disrupt R-Day celebrations.
Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium (SKCC) the main venue of R-Day celebrations has been placed under three-tier security cover for Wednesday's main function which will be attended by officials from civil administration, police and army. All routes leading to the venue have been sealed by the heavily armed security personnel from police and CRPF.
“A multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place to secure the venue of the main R-Day function at the Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium,” a police official told Kashmir Observer.
“All the high rise buildings around the main venue are being currently used by sharpshooters of J&K Police and CRPF,” he added.
As per the official, three-tier security has been put in place in Srinagar with Special Operations Group and CID men in civvies being deployed around the venue and other strategic points of the city to keep a close watch on any suspicious movement.
“Anti-sabotage checking, CCTV surveillance, mobile checkposts, surprise nakas, makeshift drop gates, sniffer dogs and drones have also been put in place to thwart any militant attempt to disrupt the smooth conduct of R-day function,” the police official said.
As per the official, SOG men and CRPF troopers have been placed at all the entry points of Srinagar and the vehicles entering the capital city are being thoroughly frisked and the identity cards of the passengers are being carefully checked before allowing the vehicle to enter Srinagar.
Notably, security forces were also seen frisking vehicles and pedestrians in several parts of the city, especially at the roads leading to the venue.
Reports also suggested that strong fortification of Sonwar, Dalgate, TRC, Rajbagh and Bakshi Stadium road has been done by security forces to meet any militant attack.
According to reports, the policemen also visited several areas of the city and collected details from the house owners.
The Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar said on Monday that security has been beefed up across Kashmir to ensure peaceful and incident free R-Day celebrations.
'For the past one week, police with help of the army and the CRPF have been carrying out area domination and other drills. We are also carrying out drone surveillance to ensure peaceful celebrations not only in Srinagar but in all district headquarters,' he had said.
