Qatar - Arab League slams attacks against UAE civilian areas

Cairo: The Council of the Arab League at the level of permanent delegates strongly condemned the recent attacks against civilian areas in the United Arab Emirates, which led to the explosion of three oil tankers and left three people killed and six others wounded.

This came in the decision issued by the emergency meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent delegates, held on Sunday under the chairmanship of the State of Kuwait, President of the Council's current session.

The State of Qatar took part in the meeting with a delegation headed by Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the Arab League H E Ambassador Salem Mubarak Al Shafi.

The Council welcomed the solidarity of countries as well as regional and international organisations with the United Arab Emirates, and its condemnation of the attacks that targeted civilian areas and facilities as a“terrorist” attack.

It also welcomed the unified position expressed unanimously by the UN Security Council in its statement issued on January 21, 2022, in which the members of the Council condemned the attacks in the strongest terms.

The Council underlined that these attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and a real threat to vital civilian facilities, energy supplies and the stability of the global economy.

These attacks also constitute a threat to regional as well as international peace and security, undermine Arab national security, and pose a threat to international commercial shipping lanes, the Council added. It also affirmed support for UAE's right to self-defence and response to aggression under international law, commending UAE's keenness to respect international law, and its compliance with relevant UN resolutions.

It underscored the need for the international community to stand united in the face of this terrorist act that threatens regional along with international peace and stability, urged the UN and the Security Council to assume its responsibilities.

The Council requested the Arab League Secretary-General to follow up on the implementation of this resolution and to submit a report in this regard to the Council at its next 157th ordinary session. 

In his speech during the opening session, Ambassador Al Shafi reiterated the State of Qatar's firm stance in strongly rejecting and condemning the recent attacks that targeted civilian areas in the UAE that led to several deaths and injuries. He said that the State of Qatar considers targeting civilian installations and vital facilities a terrorist act that violates all international norms and laws. 

He also reiterated Qatar's firm position on rejecting violence and terrorist acts that target civilians and civilian facilities, pointing out Qatar's warning that the continuation of such actions can create instability in the region.
