KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan defeated the Netherlands by 36 runs in the first One Day International (ODI) cricket match played in Doha on Friday.

The Netherlands won the toss and chose to bowl first. Afghanistan's skippers Shahaidi and Rahmat Shah played brilliant innings and help their side set 223 runs targets to the opposition.

Rahmat Shah's 102 balls 70 and Shahidi's 94 balls 73 at a crucial stage provided Afghanistan's innings stability in the batting after the loss of a couple of wickets early loss.

In the replay, the Netherlands were restricted to 186 in 48 overs by Afghanistan's strong bowling attack.

Rashid Khan took three; Yamin and Mujeeb grabbed two wickets each and help their side secure a comfortable win over the Netherlands in their first ODI of three matches series.

Skipper Shahidi was awarded man of the match for his brilliant batting in a pressure situation.

The second match between the two sides will be played on January 23.
