As the country entered the third wave of the pandemic and cases are consistently rising, an expert has highlighted the need for emotional well-being for people contracting and isolating with COVID-19.

Middle East Psychological Association Qatar Chapter Director and Flourishing Minds Co-Founder, Tina Balachandran, says it is understandable to hear mixed feelings as everyone is dealing with it in their own unique way.

“There is shock at having contracted COVID-19 this time, having stayed safe through the previous waves, worry about having to go back to more precautions, frustration having to deal with online school again. On the other end, there is positive mindset and hope that we are going to cope and get through this,” Balachandran, who is also a clinical psychologist, said while talking to The Peninsula.

Among the people who experienced isolation is an educator where she termed it as“isolation intimidation”. She and her husband decided to isolate themselves and stay in a hotel after they found out that her husband's relatives tested positive for COVID-19.

She said that she was“stunned for the entire day” upon hearing the news.

Balachandran, who is also under home isolation, said:“There is no right or wrong feeling here. It's important to be able to acknowledge your emotions,“I am feeling …. (anxious, worried, upset, scared) or (hopeful, relieved that we are okay).” Recognising your feelings allow you to work through them.”

Moreover, she recommended:“If you're isolating at home, stay connected with family, friends, loved ones. Try to stick to your routine as best as you can, finding time for physical activity — be it stretches, spot jogging, dancing.

Use this time to reconnect with things that you may not otherwise have time for. Give yourself the permission to do things that you enjoy and to relax. Also, eat a balanced diet and keep hydrated.”
