Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani has stressed that his new book Qatar We Lived would be a reference for Qatari youth and historians interested in Qatar.

The book, which documents Qatar's meteoric rise since its inception, was launched yesterday by Sheikh Faisal with Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library H E Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari in attendance.

Speaking during the launch, Sheikh Faisal, an avid antique collector, and promoter of Qatar's cultural and historical heritage, said:“This book is from my desire to document Qatar's history. I hope Qatari youth read it and understand its growth from its founding. It is also targeted at historians from any part of the world who are interested in learning about Qatar.”

Launched in Arabic, the book will soon be published in nine other languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, Turkish, Chinese, Hindi, Persian and Portuguese.

Born in 1948, Sheikh Faisal is the great-grandson of Sheikh Jassim bin Muhammed Al Thani, the founder of the State of Qatar. He has experienced Qatar's journey to the discovery of oil and gas and the country's rapid economic and infrastructural development.

Commenting on the process of writing the book, Sheikh Faisal said he had a team that helped in collecting data as well as the sourcing and referencing, stressing,“However, I wrote the most of the book during the lockdown, and it took about a year for it to get published and licensed.”

Responding to a question on the possibility of the book being included in the educational curriculum, Sheikh Faisal said,“The information is there now and it's down to the experts to decide if it should be included in the school curriculum.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Al Kawari, in a statement, said he the book is a valued 'treasure' for the future generation of Qatari leaders.

“It is not a surprise that my dear friend H E Sheikh Faisal consolidates such valuable information in his book, which we consider an important treasure for us, the future generation of Qatar's leaders, citizens, and residents. With the efforts of every member of the publishing team headed by Sheikh Faisal, we look forward to seeing Qatar We Lived reach all homes and libraries in Qatar to make sure that the community is aware and educated on this valuable history,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Qatar We Lived discusses the country's character, understanding its geographical location, population and forging strategic relations with its neighbours far and near.

With compelling photographs and narrations, it brings to life Qatar's transition from communal life into a modern state, formation of administrative and governmental institutions, and the visions and policies of its rulers.

The book also highlights the development and achievements under the leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. It explains how he has tackled extraordinary circumstances that have boosted his ability to govern the state and protect its sovereignty with the historic support from the people of Qatar.

The book, which is distributed by Hamad Bin Khalifa University Publishing House, is available at the ongoing Doha International Book Fair at the HBKU Press booth.
