EU discards Russia’s endeavors to “build spheres of influence” in Eurozone

(MENAFN) The European Union discards efforts to “build spheres of influence” in Europe, stated the EU foreign policy chief on Friday, January 15.

Josep Borrell said to journalists during a media briefing with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian after the casual conference of EU foreign ministers in Brest, France, “We remain open to dialogue with Russia, but never at the expense of our freedom, sovereignty, independence, and the respect of fundamental values.”

He clarified that “the European security architecture was at the heart of the discussion” of the conference which lasted for two days of EU foreign ministers conducted by the French presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The EU foreign ministers asked Russia to scale-down and repeated the Union’s harmony with Ukraine.
