KABUL (Pajhwok): US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has discussed with UN and ICRC officials efforts to boost the provision of urgently needed humanitarian aid and other activities supporting basic human needs in Afghanistan.
Blinken had a virtual meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths and ICRC President Peter Maurer.
He highlighted America's latest contribution of more than $308 million towards humanitarian assistance for the people of Afghanistan, the State Department spokesperson said.
Ned Price quoted the secretary as renewing the Biden administration's ongoing commitment to supporting the people of Afghanistan.
The funding will go to humanitarian organisations and help provide lifesaving protection and shelter, essential health care, winterisation assistance, emergency food aid, water, sanitation and hygiene services.
Blinken, Griffiths and Maurer discussed how to further protect and support aid groups in overcoming challenges related to Afghanistan's extremely difficult operational landscape to ensure that aid reached the people who needed it most.
The secretary noted the State Department's growing engagement on women's issues in Afghanistan at senior levels, including the recent appointment of Rina Amiri as special envoy on Afghan women, girls and human rights.
