Doha: A Qatar University study has disclosed that supplementation of fish oil (FO) with a maximum content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) starting at middle age may be beneficial for maintaining better bone health as one age.

The study, published in the 16th issue of the university's Research Magazine, also stated that fish oils aren't all the same, adding“the EPA and DHA content are the essential elements as well as the quality of the fish oils.

The research led by Dr. Md Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences at QU, fed 12-month old mice with 1% and 4% CFO and 4% omega-6 safflower oil (SFO) diets. It also included a group with a 4% regular FO with low content EPA and DHA diet and a group with a lab chow diet as a control for 12 months.

The researchers discovered that the supplementation of 4% CFO is very efficient in maintaining BMD in aging mice, whereas 1% CFO is only mildly beneficial.

According to the study, the findings indicate that the more EPA and DHA content in the FO, the better the effect on bone health.

In another study, researchers discovered that DHA is more anti-inflammatory and anti-bone resorptive than EPA, which indicates that more DHA content in the FO might be more protective against inflammatory osteoporotic bone loss.

Osteoporosis related to various factors, including menopause and ageing is the most common chronic metabolic bone disease, characterized by increased bone fragility. It has been estimated that more than 200 million people have osteoporosis.

According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation statistics, worldwide, 1 in 3 women over the age of 50 years and 1 in 5 men will experience osteoporotic fractures in their lifetime.

Meanwhile, besides bone health, EHA is taken for some heart-related conditions, including clogged heart arteries, to prevent or treat heart attacks and reduce blood fats called triglycerides in people with very high levels.

In combination with DHA in fish oil preparations, it is used to prevent and reverse heart disease and decrease irregular heartbeats, asthma, cancer, menstrual problems, hot flashes, hay fever, lung diseases, lupus, and kidney disease caused by an immune reaction.

The mixture is also used for migraine headache prevention in adolescents, skin infections, Behçet's syndrome, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, psoriasis, Raynaud's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.
