Sophie van Huellen is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics. Her research focus is on primary commodities (production, processing, pricing, risk management and trade), international finance (macro-financial linkages) and applied econometrics.

She is Co-Investigator for the 'Reservoir Computing for Macroeconomic Modelling' project funded by the ESRC Research Methods Development Grants (2020) with Prof Petros Dellaportas (UCL) as Principal Investigator. She is also an editor for Open Economics and currently acts as Interim Research Director for the Anti-Corruption Evidence (ACE) SOAS Consortium led by Prof Mushtaq Khan (SOAS).

She has worked as a consultant for various international, regional, and national institutions including the German Federal Ministry of Finance for a project on the adequacy of regulations of commodity derivative markets, the African Development Bank for a background paper on the West African cocoa sector, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) for a background paper on the commodity super cycle.

She obtained a BA in Economics, Politics and Philosophy from the University of Erfurt, Germany. She was further trained in economics (MSc and PhD) at SOAS, before joining the Department of Economics as a Lecturer in 2015.
