Massive companies like Microsoft and Sony love to partner up with game studios in the making of titles that tend to leave the gaming fans mesmerized by the exclusive titles. And while Microsoft is known to be quite a big player in the gaming industry, acquiring a ton of studios under its massive reign, Sony remains to be much more choosing when it comes acquiring studios.

However, Sony has recently acquired a total of 5 different game studios in the last year alone. And just like always, Sony loves to acquire studios that they have worked before in the past and that is exactly the case now. However, all the studios that Sony has acquired in the last year all of them have some sort of speciality that makes them stand out from the rest.

Some studios tend to be more VR and AR oriented while other studios are popular for making “remakes” of the iconic titles. And in this article, we will discuss all of the 5 studios that Sony has acquired in 2021.

Nixxes Software

Coming up a with a game idea, planning it all out and working hard to turn it into a reality is great, but making a game that is not available on certain platform available is just as great for the players. I have waited for a lot of great mobile games to get PC port like the recent Geshin Impact just so I can play better and improve my Genshin Impact account stats. Nixxes Software is the studio Sony has acquired recently as they specialize in making PC ports for the games and I can sense that we will be seeing more ports coming out in the future by Sony.

Nixxes Software have made ports in the past for popular titles including, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and even the Tomb Raider series. According to the Sony officials, Nixxes Software will be a much-needed addition to their company.

Firesprite

The next studio on this list is Firesprite, a major go-to studio for Sony in the past for the development of multiple VR titles, including The Sony’s Playroom VR game and more recent, The persistance. Firesprite is a studio based in UK that specializes in such type of VR games and finally Sony decided to acquire the studio a few months back in 2021.

Sony has shown great efforts working on the VR games in the past and this move only makes it much easier for Sony to develop much more intuitive and thrilling VR games for their PSVR. And since the future of VR gaming looks brighter than ever, there’s no time like now to up the game.

Bluepoint

Bluepoint Games is a Studio that has worked for Sony on multiple projects for quite a long time and it is a name unknown to none of the Sony fans. The company is well-known for producing high-quality remakes and remasters, such as Shadow of the Colossus. Demon's Souls, the studio's most recent product, is a remake of the popular FromSoftware game that was initially published on the PlayStation 3.

The title required a much-needed remake for so long in order for the new generation to enjoy the thrilling experience of a classic Demon Souls game and thanks to Bluepoint, it got one. Sony purchased Bluepoint in September 2021. The purchase was widely anticipated, and it was widely assumed that it was only a matter of time until the studio became an official member of the PlayStation family.

HouseMarque

Housemarque produced their most ambitious PlayStation game to date in 2021, named Returnal, which is a roguelike sci-fi game which revolves around the story of an astrounaut caught in a time loop after crash-landing on an alien planet. And even before that, Housemarque has been no stranger to the Sony fans. It has released numerous PlayStation exclusives throughout the years, notably Resogun, which was released as a PS4 launch title almost a decade back. The game exemplifies the studio's strength, which is creating graphically stunning bullet-hell games.

Sony purchased the studio back in June. Ilari Kuittinen, Housemarque's co-founder, revealed in an interview with GQ that under Sony, the company would be able to explore more ambitious concepts and interact with other PlayStation developers.

Valkyrie Entertainment

The next one and probably the bigget addition to the list of studios owned by Sony is Valkyrie Entertainment which was recently acquired by Sony studio. Valkyire has headquarters in Seattle, and it offers co-development services to other studios. The studio has contributed to the development of various triple-A titles, including the highly popular God of War and Forza Motorsport 7.

Valkyrie is Sony's most recent acquisition of the year, following in the footsteps of its previous acquisition. Valkyrie will help in the development of key PlayStation Studios franchises, according to the head of PlayStation Studios. The studio is assisting on God of War Ragnarok, which is set for release in 2022. Although it appears that Valkyrie will not be creating any unique games, its vast expertise and experience should be extremely beneficial to the rest of the PlayStation family.

Sony has consistently been teaming up with different developers around the world and acquiring some of the best studios in hopes to create some of the best exclusive titles in the upcoming years and I am super thrilled to see what Sony has in store for us next year.
