Olaf Scholz wins elections to become Germany’s new chancellor

(MENAFN) On Wednesday Olaf Scholz was officially elected as Chancellor of Germany, marking the end of Angela Merkel's 16-year ruling period on top of Europe's largest economy.

Ms Merkel received a round of applause by MPs while sitting in the public gallery in parliament ahead of their voting to approve Mr Scholz's appointment, which removes the last obstacle for his three-party coalition.

Mr Scholz, 63, won the election vote by 395 to 303, gaining the necessary majority in the 736-seat parliament.

He takes charge with a duty to modernize Germany but deals with the instant difficulties of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian military build-up on the east side of Ukraine’s border.
