Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation's specialist medical technology leads the region and is comparable with the best in the world.

HMC's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Abdulla Al Ansari said the organisation had invested in ensuring the latest technology was available to patients in Qatar.

“HMC has opened 10 state-of the-art hospitals over the past decade and with that expansion has also come an investment in the latest technology,” Dr. Al Ansari said.“This means that patients now have access to some of the best diagnostic tools, new and leading-edge treatments here in Qatar.”

Amongst this is HMC's robotic surgery program which includes technology such as the DaVinci surgery robot, offering more precise and ergonomic capabilities using magnified 3D HD vision and its articulated robotic arms controlled completely by the surgeon. Qatar is among the pioneers in this surgery in the region and recently the team performed the country's first ever robotic pancreatic surgery.

“HMC's surgical facilities are on par with the best in the world and this is backed up by our highly trained specialist teams who are performing complex and successful surgeries,” Dr. Al Ansari said.

“Earlier this year our Transplant teams performed Qatar's first lung transplant surgery and our Neurosurgery teams are continuing to perform complex, life-saving procedures.

“Being able to perform complicated and challenging surgical procedures like lung transplant here in Qatar as well as having facilities in place for first class follow-up care, demonstrates the high standards of expertise and state-of-the-art technology available to our patients.”

Meanwhile, in a first of its kind effort for Qatar, a group of investigators from HMC's Rheumatology Osteoporosis team in collaboration with FRAX team from the University of Sheffield in the UK have formulated a fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX tool), which is expected to enhance osteoporosis management among Qatar's population and worldwide.

The National Center for Cancer Care and Research houses the first PET CT scanner in the region, which is a highly advanced way for cancers to be detected and monitored, to improve patient outcomes. The NCCCR is the only place in Qatar dedicated to the treatment of cancer, as it provides the latest international technologies in radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and other treatment programs.

Providing an essential service, HMC's internationally accredited Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, which is the country's central lab, is home to some of the most advanced and rapid diagnostic facilities and tools in the region. This ensure patients have access to their results as soon as possible.

In 2020 HMC's Ophthalmology Department opened the Laser Vision Correction Unit at the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC). The unit offers vision correction surgeries using three different technologies, namely: Laser, Lasik, and Femto-SMILE technologies. Femto-SMILE is considered the most advanced technology in this field and is only available in the most advanced ophthalmology centres around the world.

“Our hospitals, Ambulance Service, Surgical facilities, Cancer treatment services, and Diagnostic services, to mention just a few, are all equipped with leading-edge technology on par with the very best healthcare providers around the globe,” said Dr. Al Ansari.
