NEW YORK — Edelman has hired Publicis Communications' Brent Nelsen as the agency's global chief Innovation and strategy officer and co-chair of the Edelman Trust Institute.

Nelsen will lead Edelman's global strategic network and help lead the development and expansion of the recently launched Trust Institute. His remit includes accelerating the incorporation of trust science into Edelman's strategic offering.

As co-chair of the Trust Institute, Nelsen will direct the evolution of Edelman's suite of trust advisory and data service offerings. Nelsen will report to global chair of integration Christoph Becker who was hired in June to drive integration across the Edelman network's full array of offerings. He formally joins Edelman January 3.

Nelsen's Trust Institute co-chair is Martin Whittaker, senior advisor of Edelman Impact, the firm's climate initiative. The former JUST Capital CEO is one of two senior hires and numerous commitments Edelman unveiled in November in response to increasing pressure from climate activists to cut ties with fossil fuel companies.

Global vice chairman Russell Dubner who has been overseeing the Trust Institute as chair, will be leaving the firm at the end of the year. Global chief innovation and strategy officer Lee Maicon will now take the role of head of strategic growth.

Edelman launched the Trust Institute in June as a hub for the in-depth study of public trust in business, government and media, with the overarching goal of improving it at a time when confidence in institutions is at a low.

“Our journey to become the global communications partner of choice and our ambition to transform the communications industry requires a strategic global leader with the stature and experience of Brent,” said Becker.“Edelman solutions will connect through trust and inspire through action and Brent's leadership will bring that to life for our clients.”

Nelsen joins Edelman from Publicis Communications, where he was most recently chief strategy officer of North America. In that role he actively worked across all of the network's creative agencies, served as an executive lead for Publicis Groupe Canada and worked on key clients like T-Mobile and the Canadian Tire Corporation.

Prior to Publicis Communications, Nelsen spent more than a decade at Leo Burnett, where he served as chief strategy officer of Leo Burnett Canada. Over his 25-plus year career, he also held strategic planning roles at DDB Worldwide, McCann Worldgroup and Cossette Communication Marketing.
