A peek into Qatar's elegance from the past through ceramics as Qatari artist Haifa Al Khuzai holds her first major ceramics exhibition in coordination with Katara Art Centre and Sheraton Grand Doha.

Dubbed as“Al Naghda: Elegance from the past,” the exhibit which is in line with the celebration of the upcoming Qatar National Day (QND) on December 18 will run through this whole month.

Haifa Al Khuzai told The Peninsula that it is crucial to give importance to the past.“Our past is our basics, if we don't have it, we cannot have the future. It is important to know what our ancestors have gone through, how they lived, and I portray these using this kind of medium.”

This is the second medium that Al Khuzai stepped in, the first was painting. Being in the ceramic arts for two years, she disclosed that moving to one medium from another is an artist's way to expand his horizons.“The artist doesn't have to stop in one style, he must search all the time for new things, when I make this three-dimension, at the beginning I start to like it so I make more and more and now I have a lot of ideas to put into three-dimension,” she explained.

Fifteen art pieces are on display at Sheraton Grand Doha Atrium Lounge. These portray traditional women's clothing, motifs and patterns of local fashion, fabrics and oyster wherein Qatar became well-known about pearl diving before founding oil.

For his part, Katara Arts Centre Manager and Curator, Mohammad Abualrob said:“Few Qatari artists do ceramics by hand and one of them is Haifa. This ceramic is authentic handmade pieces represent Qatar's old fashion and patterns.”

“This is why we focus to host because she's doing a different medium, not just typical oil or painting and created into a kind of objects, and this is unique,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Sheraton Grand Doha General Manager, Belal Al Kadry said:“Sheraton Doha is not simply just a hotel, it is a milestone in Qatar`s history and a popular landmark with its impressive style, opulent décor, and rich hospitality.”

Al Khuzai's artworks are also for sale which starts at QR4,000, the exhibit is open to the public. She recently commissioned a collection of ceramic and porcelain works for Al Thumama Stadium which is among the venues for the FIFA World Cup 2022.
