Head of UNAMA meets Afghanistan's Deputy Foreign Minister

UN Secretary General's special representative for Afghanistan and head of United Nations Assistant Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Deborah Lyons met with Deputy Foreign Minister Sher Muhammad Abbas Stanekzai on Monday.

Spokesperson of the foreign ministry Abdul Qahar Balkhi in a Twitter post said the Lyons expressed assurance of security and added that the UN plans to expand their mission in Afghanistan.

As per the spokesperson, Deborah Lyons added that all their local and international staff are back to their jobs.

“UN plans to expand their operations and exert efforts towards unfreezing Afghanistan's assets and for world countries to reopen their embassies in Kabul.” Reads a Twitter post.

Abdul Qahar Balkhi added that the Deputy Foreign Minister thanked the UN for their endeavors, assured them of the education sector, and called for their cooperation in paying salaries for teachers.

The request comes as formerly UNICEF and lately Germany announced to be paying the salaries of Afghan teachers directly.

In the latest move, UNAMA sent Afghanistan's Central Bank $16 million in cash as part of their humanitarian aid to the country.
