On November 29, 2021, the Gotham Awards were held. Hwang Dong-hyuk, Lee Jung-Jae, and JungHo-Yeon, the creators of Squid Game, were spotted at the prestigious award ceremony. Squid Game, a popular South Korean survival drama series available on Netflix, has won the Gotham Awards 2021 Breakthrough Series award. The long category was won by Hwang Dong- Hyuk's show. Small Axe, It's A Sin, The Good Lord Bird, The Underground Railroad, and The White Lotus are among the other series that have been nominated . It is rumored that this is certainly the first time a South Korean production has received such recognition at the Gotham Awards.
Hwang Dong-hyuk while accepting the award, said,“When I wrote this script 12 years ago in 2009 I did my best but no one liked it – they said it was too violent, absurd, weird. It took less than 12 days [after release] to become the Number One show on the planet. If there's a miracle, this is a miracle. It happened to me. The only thing I can say is to thank you. Thank you for watching it, and thank you for loving it.”

Squid Game , which was released on Netflix, was an instant hit with viewers, and its widespread success cannot be denied. Squid Game is a dark drama that explores various themes such as capitalism and class disparities. Within a week, it had become one of Netflix's most popular shows in several regional regions.
