KABUL (Pajhwok): The International Hospital Federation (IHF) has recognised the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) as the gold winner of the Sultanate of Oman Excellence Award for Health Services in crisis.

The Kabul-based hospital has been awarded for the project“Reaching the Unreached: Harnessing Technology for Healthcare in Afghanistan.” It was given the award at the 44th IHF World Hospital Congress in Barcelona.

A statement from IHF said the award honoured the work of hospitals and healthcare institutions in crises from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate changes in developing countries.

The award committee recognised FMIC's project as a gold winner for its extraordinary services using e-health technology to address the necessities of patients living in remote areas of Afghanistan.

The patients lost access to healthcare because of COVID-19 and the ongoing insecurity. The e-health programme enabled the patients to benefit from teleconsultation, teleradiology, telepathology and e-learning opportunities for healthcare workers through advanced technology.

The technology links Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Aga Khan Health Services in Khorog, Necker Hospital in France, Bamyan Provincial Hospital, Faizabad Provincial Hospital and Mirwais Regional Hospital in Kandahar to FMIC.

In 2020, the e-health programme facilitated 4,482 teleconsultations and 63 online training sessions for 869 participants, including nurses and doctors.

“This technological facility is a lifeline for Afghanistan and paves the way to provide access to patients across Afghanistan,” the statement added.

FMIC CEO Aziz Ahmad Jan said:“This award is achieved as a result of hard work and dedication of FMIC's team in difficult times.”
