Russia condemns new penalties imposed on Belarus

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Russia condemned a new sequence of penalties imposed on Belarus which is being held accountable for the immigration situation at the Polish-Belarusian frontier.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated in a statement about the sanctions forced by the EU, US, UK as well as Canada, “these sanctions are illegitimate, like any restrictions imposed in circumvention of the United Nations Security Council. They are inhumane due to their negative impact on the lives of ordinary citizens of Belarus.”

The announcement claimed that the new restrictions that started to be applied on Thursday are politically prejudiced and an instance of interfering in the internal affairs of an independent state.

Calling on western nations to act to find a solution to the immigration catastrophe in collaboration with Belarusian authorities, the statement reported: “The history of previous migration crises proves that their solutions can be found only through close cooperation between the countries of origin, transit and destination of migrants.”
