The British Council Qatar recently launched its Qatar Environment Champions Programme that will develop and amplify support for climate change action amongst young people and institutions in the country.
The programme is in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar and Qatar Green Building Council.
The Environment Champions Programme will look to raise awareness and encourage the Qatari society to do their part to tackle global warming. It will also bring together education institutions working with youth and civil society organisations that focus on environment challenges and engage partnership support and endorsement from key government agencies. This is in line with the activities which took place at the United National Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
British Council Qatar Country Director, Sam Ayton said:“The climate crisis can only be addressed through cooperation and joint action. We are therefore very pleased to deliver the Qatar Environment Champions Programme with our partners, bringing together local initiatives, young people and communities and support their efforts on driving Climate Change action in legacy of COP26 and beyond. If together we take social action and spread awareness, we can and will address the challenge of climate change.”
The Ministry of Education Training and the Educational Development Center Director Hissa Al Aali, said:“Qatar's National Vision 2030 aims to transform the State of Qatar into an advanced country capable of achieving sustainable development and environmental development, which falls under one of the four pillars of this vision developed through the establishment of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education is considered one of the tributaries of realising this vision.
“The Center for Training and Educational Development at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education is keen to promote local and global citizenship, in partnership and in cooperation with the British Council and look forward to implementing the Qatar Environment Champions Programme with the aim of consolidating a culture of sustainability in educational institutions and tackling challenges in the field of education.”
“The programme is considered the starting point for social work and change. Led by a group of teachers to make a difference by combining passion and work for a better tomorrow, they will work towards encouraging innovative solutions in the field of sustainability, especially in regards to climate change through the projects that will be presented. Moreover, one of the expected outputs of the programme we look forward to is the establishment of a network of national trainers equipped with the skills, knowledge and motivation to tackle climate action.” the director added.
The Qatar Environment Champions Programme, which is funded by Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the UK government, has been delivered during October to November 2022 to nearly 60 participants.
