(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Nov. 28 (Petra) -- Jordan and Egypt agreed on Sunday to raise the exchange capacity of a joint power interconnection from 500 megawatts currently to 1,000 megawatts in the future, to enable the two countries to exchange energy with the countries of the region.
The plan was announced in a joint press statement by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh and his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Shaker, after a meeting during which they discussed plans to expand the electrical connection between the two countries and prospects for opening new energy markets to import and export electricity.
Kharabsheh said that the agreement will help expand the electrical systems in the two countries to reach new markets and reduce costs, pointing out that within two months, bids will be launched to implement the Jordanian electrical connection with Iraq.
In a related context, Kharabsheh said that the Jordanian electrical system is ready to supply Lebanon with its energy needs, especially after stakeholders agreed on the formula for the final contract during a meeting of the electricity ministers in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon on October 18.
According to the agreement, Lebanon will be supplied with about 150 megawatts of electricity from the Jordanian network through Syria during the period from midnight to 6 in the morning, and 250 megawatts for the rest of the day.
Jordan is electrically interconnected with the Egyptian electrical network from the south via a (13)km, 400 kV submarine cable across the Gulf of Aqaba with an exchange capabilities of (550) MW .
