Qatar - Shura Council Speaker attends IPU Assembly, Islamic Parliamentary Group meeting in Madrid


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Madrid: On the sidelines of 143rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Speaker of the Shura Council H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim participated in different important parliamentary gatherings and held meetings with officials from IPU and Turkey.

The Speaker participated on Thursday in the coordination meeting of the Arab Parliamentary Group, on the sidelines of the 143rd Assembly of IPU.

Secretary-General of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union Fayez Al Shawabkeh welcomed Speaker H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, wishing him success in presiding over the Shura Council for the good of the nation and the interests of the citizens, looking forward to furthering Arab parliamentary cooperation and coordination.

They discussed several topics on the 143rd IPU Assembly agenda, where the representative of the Arab geopolitical group in the IPU Executive Committee made a presentation on the committee's work. Also, they exchanged views on requests for the inclusion of emergency or additional items on the Assembly's agenda, in addition to agreeing on the Arab Group candidates for vacant positions in the IPU permanent and subsidiary committees.

The Speaker of the Shura Council met yesterday with the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union H E Martin Chungong on the sidelines of the 143rd General Assembly in the Spanish capital Madrid.

The existing parliamentary relations between the Shura Council and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and ways of supporting and strengthening them, were reviewed. Topics on the agenda of the General Assembly were also discussed.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador of Qatar to Spain H E Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al Hamar, member of the Shura Council and Chairman of the Council's Internal and External Affairs Committee H E Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri and Secretary-General of the Council H E Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser Al Fadala. 

H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim also met Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of the sisterly Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Sentop. Aspects of cooperation and existing relations between the two brotherly countries in the parliamentary field and ways of enhancing them were reviewed. In addition, the two sides discussed topics on the agenda of the General Assembly.

Speaker participated yesterday in the coordinating meeting of the Islamic Parliamentary Group. He stressed the necessity of unifying positions and agreement regarding the inclusion of the emergency item on the agenda of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, indicating that coordination and prior cooperation would succeed in efforts aimed to include the item which the Islamic group agrees upon.

Turkish Speaker Mustafa Sentop gave a speech in which he referred to a set of topics related to Islamic parliamentary work. He pointed to the centrality of the Palestinian cause and the importance of supporting it, and strengthening the parliamentary efforts of Islamic countries to stop the violations against the Palestinians and work to obtain their rights.

He pointed to the Islamic countries' capability of joint work and fruitful cooperation, indicating that the common ties that bring together Islamic countries outweigh the causes of division and difference.

The Shura Council participated in a coordination meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), on the sidelines of the 143rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that is currently taking place in Madrid.

Representing the council in the meeting were Mohammed bin Mahdi Al Ahbabi, Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi, Mohammed bin Omar Al Mannai, members of the council.
