Dr David Souter, Chief Research Officer, Australian Institute of Marine Science and Global Coordinator, Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network
David is a coral reef ecologist whose initial research interest focussed on crown-of-thorns starfish on the Great Barrier Reef. For the last 20 years, David has been involved in coral reef research, tropical coastal ecosystems management, global assessments and scientific capability development in Australia, East Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands, South and Southeast Asia through World Bank, UNEP, Sida, and Australian Government funded programs. In his current role as Chief Research Officer at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), David is focussed on the management and coordination of research at AIMS, particularly the collaborative development of the long-term strategic research directions of the Institute and the communication of science to managers, decision makers and stakeholders. In addition, David is the Global Coordinator of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), which is a worldwide network of scientists, institutes and organisations that monitor the condition of coral reefs throughout the world. The GCRMN is an operational network of the International Coral Reef Initiative, and responsible for providing the best available scientific information on the status and trends of coral reef ecosystems for their conservation and management.
