(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: The Local Areas Infrastructure Programme of Ashghal has won the International Green Apple Environment Award 2021. The award was received by Eng Saoud Al Tamimi, Manager of Roads Projects Department (RPD) at Ashghal and Eng Noor Ashkanani, Project Engineer, in a ceremony that took place on 15th November 2021 in London at the Royal Horseguards Hotel.

“We are very proud of this achievement as it rewards RPD team efforts, who strived for notable environmental management and sustainability milestones leading to a proliferation of best practices, independent sustainability initiatives and raising of sustainability awareness across Qatar,” Eng Al Tamimi said.

He added that RPD has implemented innovative tools to accurately record and monitor its total carbon impacts and reductions and initiated the establishment of key construction material recycling yards that significantly increased resource efficiency and reduced required transportation distances.

He highlighted that resource efficiency, sustainability reporting and enhancing competitiveness of organizations, drive RPD's continual improvement. Through the implementation of such best practices, the Local Areas Infrastructure Programme included 43% recycled materials in completed construction works up to September 2021 and reduced a total of 121,673 tonnes (CO2e) carbon emissions with a total of 5,384,898 tonnes of recycled materials included in construction works, 3,648,695 m³ of groundwater recycled into construction works, 3,346 tonnes of non-hazardous waste recycled, 711 tonnes of waste tyres recycled into crumb rubber (CRMB), 8,195,508 tonnes of construction waste diverted from landfill and 73,350 tonnes of carbon emissions reduced through efficient material transportation.

Eng. Ashkhanai said that“RPD promoted a culture of sustainability and environmental best practices among all its parties and worked relentlessly on enhancing the competitiveness of organizations through staff involvement of RPD team, the contractors and supervision consultants, and through hosting rewarding initiatives such as the Best Champion Projects Initiative and Ashghal's Annual Green Award initiative.”

The Local Areas Infrastructure Programme comprises more than 70 projects under construction across all of Qatar in addition to several projects currently being in design, in tender, and in awarding stages. Those projects aim at providing an integrated infrastructure following the highest international standards in sustainability, quality and safety.

The Green Organisation is an international, independent, non-profit, non-political environment group that began in 1994 to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practices around the world.
