(MENAFN) On Saturday, Oct. 23 Nigeria’s correctional service affirmed that over 800 inmates fled after an assault by anonymous shooters on a custodial center in southwest Nigeria's Oyo state.

837 inmates waiting for trial fled the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abolongo area of the state after an assault by shooters on the facility on Friday evening, Olanrewaju Anjorin, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in the Oyo state, noted in a report.

Anjorin stated: "the invaders were said to have arrived the center heavily armed with sophisticated weapons and after a fierce encounter with officers on guard, gained entrance into the yard using dynamite to blast the wall."

He added the shooters freed the 837 detainees waiting for trial after getting into the center, but the cells housing 64 convicts were not vandalized.
