Canadian retail trade grows during August

(MENAFN) On Friday, Oct. 22 Statistics Canada reported that the country’s retail trade surged 2.1 percent reaching 57.2 billion Canadian dollars (around USD46.2 billion) during August.

Statistics Canada ascribed the growth to higher sales at food and drinks stores, gasoline stations, and clothing and clothing accessories stores. Amidst the current coronavirus pandemic, a number of provincial governments relaxed public health restrictions in a number of regions across Canada in August, which directly helped the retail industry.

The sales at food and beverage stores climbed 4.8 percent and the sales at gasoline stations jumped 3.8 percent whereas those sales at clothing and clothing accessories stores surged 3.9 percent.

Retail sales grew in nine of 11 subsectors, accounting for 94.6 percent of retail trade.
