Srinagar: The residents of Nishat-Ishber stretch on Saturday slammed the J & K Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) for keeping the concrete manholes open on the road following repair work resulting in multiple accidents.
Residents called the Kashmir Observer office complaining that three days after the department completed the repair work of the drainage line, they kept the manholes open on the road.
“It's very unfortunate that they didn't even bother to erect caution signs for motorists on this busy road,” said Aijaz Ahmad who witnessed two collisions on the road.
A Sumo and a Maruti car had a head on collision Saturday morning as according to reports, the former tried to dodge the open manhole to avoid hitting a biker. Driver of the Maruti was badly injured.
He said that if the repair work was completed three days ago, the manholes should have been plugged in, keeping in view of the rush on the road.
Talking to Kashmir Observer, Executive Engineer, LAWDA Mohammad Ashraf Baba said that the work on the raising of concrete manholes was being executed from the department so it was necessary to keep the holes open. He, however, said that they had put the big rocks around the hole to avoid any untoward incident.
When asked why were not the caution signs placed on the road, he said: "Let me check with the incharge officer".
