Al Thumama Stadium is a milestone on way to hosting Qatar 2022: Al Naama


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) QNA Doha: The official spokesperson of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), Khalid Al Naama, said that the inauguration of Al Thumama Stadium is a new milestone on the way to hosting the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup, especially since the stadium witnessed the first model of air conditioning that was adopted in the World Cup stadiums during one of the FIFA inspection visits in 2009, through a 500-seat miniature model.

Al Naama stated in a statement that the Qatar football team, the 2019 AFC Asian Cup winners, held their preparations for the Asian Championship in the vicinity of the Al Thumama Stadium.

On the latest preparations for the upcoming Amir Cup final, which will witness the inauguration of the stadium, Al Naama said that everyone knows the importance of this event at the level of the sports schedule of Qatar, especially since the final will bring together two of the best clubs in the country, Al Sadd and Al Rayyan.

He added the match will witness the attendance of 40,000 spectators, for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Al Naama pointed out the importance of using the new system for tickets that were recently put up for sale, explaining that the Fan ID system will be used in the Arab Cup, which will be held from November 30 to December 18.

Eng. Khalifa Al Mana, project manager for Al Thumama Stadium, revealed the project's features, praising the heritage engineering design that illustrates the cultural heritage of the entire Arab region.

Al Mana said that the venue includes 10 training grounds. Following the World Cup, the stadium capacity will be reduced by half and will be allocated to host two Qatari teams in the region.

He pointed out that the World Cup stadium will leave a distinguished legacy for the people of Al Thumama area, as it will include, after the end of the tournament, a branch of Aspetar Hospital, the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, and the area surrounding the stadium will become a community center that includes facilities for multiple sports such as handball, volleyball, basketball, swimming, and football. 

This area will contain jogging and cycling tracks, providing an outlet for male and female athletes.

The project manager confirmed that the stadium will witness the establishment of several retail stores and commercial units to ensure the transformation of the area into a centre full of sports and activity, in addition to a mosque and a small modern hotel on the eastern side of the stadium.
