(MENAFN) The Turkish booming e-commerce industry hit fresh heights in the coronavirus pandemic, offering a silver lining for the country’s economic troubles worsened by the global health catastrophe.
Turkish Trade Ministry stated in April that last year, the e-commerce sales in Turkey surged 66 percent year-over-year reaching 226.2 billion Turkish liras (USD24.5 billion), and the ratio of the e-commerce expenditure to gross domestic product (GDP) hit 4.1 percent, an increase of 51.8 percent from a year earlier.
The number of firms running e-commerce business in the country also jumped 275 percent to 256,861 in 2020, the ministry noted, further saying the number of orders also witnessed a climb of 68 percent.
In the first six months of this year, the expansion rate of e-commerce in the country is 75.6 percent against the corresponding period of 2020.
