São Paulo – The Council of Arab Ambassadors in Brazil hosted on Thursday (14) a farewell reception (pictured) for the ambassador of Algeria, Toufik Dahmani, in Brasília. The Algerian diplomat took over the embassy in February 2015 and will leave office in late October.

The farewell reception took place in the embassy of Palestine. The ambassador of Palestine to Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben, is also dean of the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Brazil. Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce Foreign Relations vice president Mohamad Mourad represented the institution at the tribute, which was attended by diplomats from Arab countries that work in Brazil.

Brazil and Algeria have strong trade relations. The Arab country in Africa is a major supplier of fertilizers, oil and gas for the Brazilian market, with USD 770 million in shipments last year. In turn, Brazil supplies Algeria with foods like sugar, maize, soy, peanuts, meats, oil and coffee, as well as iron ore. Sales fetched USD 1.2 billion last year.
