Qatar' s Abdulwahhab creates history at Asian Table Tennis Championship


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar's Mohamed Abdulwahhab celebrates his win over Indonesia's Fikri Faqih Fadilah in Round of 32 at the Asian Table Tennis Championships at Lusail Sports Hall, on Sunday. With the 3-1 (11-6, 11-1, 9-11, 11-5) win, Abdulwahhab became the first Qatari and Arab player to qualify for the Round of 16 stage of the continental event. Abdulwahhab, however, lost to India's Sharath Kamal Achanta 3-0 in his next match. Meanwhile, South Korean top seed in the men's singles Jang Woo-jin entered the semis following a straight games victory over Kazuhiro Yoshimura in the quarter-finals. Jang won comfortably 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 against the Japanese ninth seed at the Lusail Sports Arena.
Chinese Taipei's fourth seed Chuang Chih-Yuan was also through too with an 11-9, 11-4, 11-5 win over Japanese 29th seed Yuto Kizukuri. Lee Sang-su, the third seed from South Korea, won in straight games against Indian fifth seed Sharath Kamal Achanta 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 to progress, and 17th seed Shunsuke Togami joins him after beating Japanese compatriot 31st seed Hiroto Shinozuka 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 11-8.
Top seed in the women's singles - South Korea's Jeon Ji-hee - exited at the quarter-finals stage, losing her match against Japanese 16th seed Minami Ando 11-3, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10. Her teammate, 14th seed Shin Yu-bin, is through after beating 17th seed Zhu Chengzhu of Hong Kong 11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 6-11, 11-3.
Japanese sixth seed Hina Hayata defeated Hong Kong second seed Doo Hoi Kem 11-7, 11-7, 11-7, and her eighth seed compatriot Saki Shibata won 11-8, 15-13, 14-12 against South Korean fourth seed Suh Hyo-won.
