I am the author of three books: two novels, The Service of Clouds and The Lost Thoughts of Soldiers, and Sydney, a personal history of my hometown. These books have been nominated for national and international awards, including the Miles Franklin Award, Commonwealth Writers' Prize (Asia Pacific Division), Prime Minister's Literary Awards (nonfiction) and the National Biography Award. Sydney won the CAL Waverley Llibrary (Nib) Award in 2011. My short stories and essays have been widely anthologised, in publications such as the Penguin Century of Australian Stories and the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature and have won prizes including, most recently, the 2018 Walkley-Pascall Award for Arts Criticism. My most recent book is Signs and Wonders: Dispatches from a Time of Beauty and Loss.
