Russia’s pipeline gas exports to China almost triple this year


(MENAFN) During the first eight months of the year, deliveries of pipeline gas from Russia to China soared 2.7 times year over year hitting 4.73 million tons. The Chinese gas demand has “stunning” expansion potential, said Russia’s state energy giant Gazprom.

The Chinese General Customs Administration stated on Monday that during the January-August period of 2021, China spent around USD837.32 million on Russian gas, which is a 98.94 percent expansion against the same period of 2020.

Turkmenistan remains China’s best supplier of natural gas, providing 15.95 million tons of gas for USD4.2 billion in 2021. Russia comes in second place regarding supply volume, followed by Kazakhstan with 3.17 million tons for USD723 million, and Myanmar with 2.01 million tons for USD922 million.

China’s key supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in cited period was Australia (20.52 million tons for $8.47 billion), followed by Qatar, Malaysia, and United States. Russia came the sixth in rank in LNG imports, with 2.67 million tons for USD1.23 billion.
