(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
During his meeting with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Liz Truss, Safadi discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the economic, trade, investment and development fields, building on the outcomes of the London Initiative held in February 2019, said a Foreign Ministry statement.
The two ministers also reviewed regional developments, agreeing to continue consultation and coordination to achieve security and stability in the region and serve the common interests.
In a separate meeting, Safadi met with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, where they discussed bolstering strategic partnership between the Kingdom and the EU, highlighting the importance of continuing coordination to resolve regional crises.
Safadi extended appreciation for the EU for supporting the development process in the Kingdom and its hosting of Syrian refugees.
Safadi pointed to launching negotiations between the Kingdom and the EU pertaining to the EU-Jordan Partnership Priorities, voicing his aspiration to sign the agreement before the end of this year in parallel with the convening of the EU-Jordan Association Council.
On the Palestinian issue, Safadi praised the EU's supportive stance towards the two-state solution, stressing that it is the only way to achieve a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region.
The Jordanian foreign minister also thanked the EU for its continuous support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), to enable it to continue its services in accordance with its UN mandate.
Borrell praised the Kingdom's role, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, in promoting security and stability in the region, pointing out that the Kingdom is an important strategic partner of the EU.
Safadi also conversed with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay, focusing on strengthening cooperation between the Kingdom and UNESCO, lauding the organisation's role in preserving world heritage and stressing the importance of implementing its decisions regarding Jerusalem.
Azoulay praised the Jordanian role as part of UNESCO bodies and committees, commending its efforts in ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage and congratulating the Kingdom on the inclusion of the city of Salt on the World Heritage List.
On Sunday, Safadi met with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah, discussing ways to strengthen bilateral relations led by His Majesty King Abdullah and Kuwait Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.
Safadi also participated in the 16th annual ministerial meeting of the International Peace Institute, at the joint invitation of the UAE, Luxembourg, and HH Prince Zeid Bin Raad, president of the Institute.
