PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan will join the United Nations in urging the world to prevent an economic collapse in Afghanistan.
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrives in New York on Monday (today) for the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
Before Qureshi's arrival, UN Secretary General António Guterres said in an interview:“The situation in Afghanistan is unpredictable.”
The UN chief warned different measures and existing sanctions could completely strangle Afghanistan's economy.
Speaking to Dawn, Pakistani Ambassador Munir Akram said his country would use the opportunity to call for“preventing an economic collapse” in Afghanistan.
Akram said Pakistan's priorities in the 76th UNGA would be enhancing its own economic and social development in these challenging times.
Prime Minister Imran Khan will address the UNGA from Islamabad on Sept 24. Qureshi will attend meetings on UN Security Council reforms, climate crisis and energy issues.
Akram acknowledged Afghanistan would be the main issue before the UN General Assembly.
He said:“Our strategy is to see how to stabilise Afghanistan, restore peace, promote reconciliation … and revive the Afghan economy.”
