Doha: The Embassy of Nepal in Doha held a ceremony to mark seventh Constitution Day and the National Day of Nepal in the Embassy Hall yesterday in compliance with the precautionary and preventive measures to curb COVID-19 pandemic. Diplomatic and local staff of the Embassy and their family participated in the ceremony.

To begin the ceremony, Ambassador of Nepal to Qatar H E Dr. Narad Nath Bharadwaj lit an auspicious traditional Nepali lamp (panas). He then hoisted Nepal's national flag in the Embassy premises, which was followed by the national anthem of Nepal. During the Ceremony, Ambassador read out the national day messages delivered by the President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari and the Prime Minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba.

In his address, Ambassador Dr. Bharadwaj extended warm felicitations and hearty congratulations to each and every member of Nepali community currently residing in Qatar as well as to all Nepali people, both leaving at home and abroad, on the happy occasion of Nepal's National Day and Seventh Constitution Day.

He said that following the historic promulgation of the Constitution of Nepal on September 20, 2015 by popularly elected Constituent Assembly, Nepal has been celebrating on September 20 every year as the Constitution Day and National Day since 2016. This constitution has embraced the values of multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious, and multi-cultural society and has enshrined all the essential features of democracy, inclusion and social justice.

He shared that the Constitution has charted new course for peace, progress and prosperity for the country. The country has now started looking forward to achieving economic growth and development of the nation, a long-cherished aspiration of the Nepalis.

However, COVID-19 impeded the lives of people, societies and economies in Nepal, just like it did anywhere else in the world. With the vaccination drive picking up momentum lately, he expressed confidence to defeat the pandemic in due course. So far, Nepal has completely vaccinated nearly 20 percent of its population. Nepal has aimed to vaccinate all its eligible population by the end of the current Nepali year (Mid-April 2022).

The Ambassador said that for propelling economic growth and development, the Government of Nepal has planned to develop infrastructure, agriculture, tourism and human resource development.“Nepal is a country with abundant opportunities for foreign investors. Nepal is rich in natural resources. It has huge and cheap human resource. It is located between two of the largest and rapidly growing markets and economies of the world, India and China.”

The Government has reformed many of its policies and procedures to attract foreign investment. Investments in agriculture, tourism, health, education and physical infrastructure could be mutually beneficial to both Qatar and Nepal, he added.

He added that large Nepali community in Qatar has been a strong linkage between the two countries. The Ambassador expressed appreciation to the Government of Qatar and relevant agencies for taking care of Nepali migrants during the outbreak of the pandemic by providing necessary treatment measures as well as vaccination.

He reminded Nepali community that the threat is still not completely overcome. Hence, every member of the society needs to completely abide by all the measures introduced and adopted by the competent authorities.

The Ambassador also commended the latest series of labour reforms introduced and implemented by the Government of the State of Qatar and looked forward to collaborate on further measures in this area.
